To further clarify the open access argument (hopefully)...

Please forgive my ignorance, but why should anyone need an ISP if they have access to a cable modem? Isn't the broadband provider providing all the functions that the ISP normally provides. I can certainly understand why the ISPs feel threatened by cable providers "stealing" their business, but I just don't understand what role an ISP can play in this context. What right do they have to insist that that the suddenly deep-pocketed competitor route to their soon to be obsolete facilities?
