Holographic Dimensions, Inc. To Develop Direct Digital Holographic Printer
MIAMI, Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Holographic Dimensions, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: HGRM - news) announced today that it has entered into a technology development agreement to patent, manufacture and bring to market a Direct Digital Holographic Printer (DDHP).

Under the terms and conditions of the agreement, HDI will have exclusive rights to the technology, paying the inventor a royalty on the sale of DDHP and security holograms utilizing the technology. The Company has completed the proof of concept and has commenced production of the first commercial device.

Digital Holography involves the holographic rendering of computer graphic images pixel by pixel. The Company began to actively R&D digital holography and, in conjunction with Advanced Digital Holographics, was the first to develop Dot Matrix holography in the 1980s.

Dot Matrix hologram technology has been particularly successful in the packaging and security holographic markets and provides the following benefits over conventional embossed holographic techniques:

-- As the image is written directly to the holographic emulsion, no intermediary art conversion processes are needed.

-- Because the final images are composed of a series of independent holographic exposures, the hologram's size is limited only by available time and writing speed of the machine.

-- Full color holograms may be produced with a single frequency laser.

The limitations of existing Dot Matrix holography, and the solutions DDHP provide for include:

SPEED: Existing dot matrix machines operate with a write speed of 10-20 pixels per second making large holographic images impractical. The first generation of our DDHP technology can operate at speeds in excess of 100 dots per second, increasing to 10,000 dots per second in the next generation. This radical increase in speed provides for the ability to create large holograms for packaging, and other applications, in a reasonable time.

RESOLUTION: The highest image resolution of conventional dot matrix hologram technologies is 1,200 Dots Per Square Inch (DPI). The resolution of our prototype DDHP is variable from 800-2,000 DPI. The next generation of our DDHP technology could provide for higher resolutions approaching 5,000 DPI.

BRIGHTNESS - FULL, PHOTO-REALISTIC, COLOR:

Conventional dot matrix technologies employ a uniform level of exposure from pixel to pixel producing an image with overall uniform levels of brightness. To obtain varying brightness levels as represented in a true continuous tone photograph our DDHP technology varies the exposure of each pixel relative to the original file, thus DDHP technology provides for a much more photo realistic appearance.

HIGHEST POSITIONAL ACCURACY: A close examination of existing dot matrix holograms will show a low degree of accuracy in the position of the pixels. For this reason there is a blank, or non-exposed, area between pixels. This limits the resolution of the machine and can affect overall brightness. Our machine will produce a seamless array of pixels allowing the full surface area to contribute to the holographic image.

SURFACE QUALITY - ''LOOK'': Conventional dot matrix holograms employ the same fundamental technology, resulting in a consistent appearance, or ''look.'' Because DDHP utilizes a radically different technology, the holograms produced will have their own look. For security applications the technology will be difficult, if not impossible, to counterfeit, as other producers are limited by the operational characteristics of their machines and underlying technology.

The DDHP technology will stand out with its unique state-of-the-art look as a result of the aforementioned improvements on conventional technologies.

According to Kevin G. Brown, President & CEO of Holographic Dimensions, Inc. ''To bring this into commercial perspective this new technology, and others under development at HGRM, will expand consumer acceptance of holography. The increased speed of production, increase in image quality, and increase in production efficiency, will become the new standard for the industry insuring Holographic Dimensions, Inc.'s position as the #1 world producer of security and display holographic imagery. Additionally, this technology brings us one step closer to producing a holographic printer for use in consumer desktop applications.''

According to Jeffrey Weil, Director of Research and Development for Holographic Dimensions, ''The unique look and totally new approach to digital holography that this machine employs will keep us well ahead of our competition, and counterfeiters, now and in the future.''

Holographic Dimensions, Inc. is a vertically integrated manufacturer of holographic imagery. The Company's products are incorporated into a variety of security products including, but not limited to, credit cards, negotiable documents, event tickets, transit passes, and consumer products for marketing. The Company's customers include Merck, Lilly, NASA, The Coca-Cola Company, Hoescht, and Ameritech amongst many others.
