--So it comes as no surprise, QCOM reiterated for the umpteenth time that they will need to raise cash for vendor financing. There should not be a single analyst who uses this as a reason to downgrade.
--Big point--most licensees are covered for cdma2000, but NOT for W-CDMA. They will need to pay up again, and QCOM has already been approached on this issue by current licensees. One question I had though was whether they are covered for a converged standard--I guess we get that answer when we get a converged standard, but I believe a converged standard would also require relicensing.
--Royalty agreements last life of patent--2010+ --By the way, can you patent hounds find me a QCOM patent relating to HDTV? --handsets--on course to have capacity for 1 million per month by summer. Sold out now, running round the clock. --all those phones being built with the MSM3000 have ability to have a 200 hour standby with a standard 800mAH battery. Remember though that some batteries out there are 1700mAH+. Standby times skyrocket in that case. Those same chips allow 82 kbps rates in data. 80 grams will be common weight. --next generation MSM3100 chips are 50% smaller, 300 hour standby(with 800mAH battery), etc. Thin Phones can be thinner, and shorter, and light enough for those mythical beings who couldn't lift the Q phone. 300 hour standby times in phones with 50 gram weights. --HDR--one thing I was not so aware of was that HDR can be deployed for wireless internet access in a way that it is competitive with other solutions like cable, dialup, etc. Very small base stations(shoe box or less--sorry Maurice, not yet small enough to sprinkle over the land via air) that require no BSC or MSC(switch)-- only a router needed. The consumer can have a board in his computer with a small antenna and get always-on internet access at potential 1.8Mbps speeds. Like cable modems, multiple people using the same base will decrease access speeds. No exact numbers were given for that degradation. This is extremely attractive in my book. I would love to see the cost comparison to what Ma Bell is forking out to upgrade cable. Sign me up as soon as it is installed! --extremely confident that they will gain even more market share in CDMA phones in 99, and I do mean confident. --statement was made that if they did not beat the street estimates for growth, you would not see any of the present management up on the podium next year.
