Ooops, DRT, I should have said that your assistance was requested in helping me to understand the workings of the Alberta exchange. Do all four exchanges in Canada work in accordance with a common trading standard in which all bids and asks, along with the volume each request, are placed "on public display" without the usual intervention of a market maker? If market makers aren't used, and I can buy shares directly from someone else and at the price they listed them for sale, perhaps this accounts for one reason why commissions are higher on Canadian than US exchanges. The reason might be that in the absence of market makers taking the spread between bid and ask (as on NASDAQ), a broker's only source of revenue on any transaction is from the commission charged the buyer or seller, whichever one or the other or both that they represent.
