Hi Michael,

As I said in subsequent posts, I do know many very religious folks who have touched me deeply and who I consider to be my great friends. I do not have a problem, per se, with religious people. What I don't appreciate is people saying to go with a god I don't believe in. I wouldn't tell Shalom or you to go with Allah, or Krishna, or Buddha -- it would show little respect for your his or your personal beliefs.

The story you told is horrible. I do not treat people that way. There's no way for me to prove this to you in this forum. Having read all of the posts on the ASK GOD thread (from the beginning [yes, I actually DO have a life]) I think I have a pretty good idea where those people are coming from. Therefore, I can speak from my personal experience when I say that I don't want to associate with Shalom. As for the Mormon family in your neighborhood, I can't explain your neighbor's actions except to reiterate your statement that your neighbors are full of fear and are very ignorant of what being a Mormon is all about.

I actually had the opportunity to study Mormonism through a local temple near my college. While I can say that I didn't like many of the people I met there, I don't believe it had anything to do with their religious beliefs -- it was more of a personality misfit.

What I fear is the influence that organized religion has over many people throughout the world and here in the US. It frightens me that I may lose my right to choose what to do with my own body because of someone else's personal religious beliefs. It frightens me that I may not be able to raise or educate my children (if I choose to have them) in a way that I see fit because it conflicts with someone's personal religious beliefs. It frightens me that my friends have to live in fear of serious persecution because the way they choose to live their lives is considered morally wrong and against god.

What I ask for is to not be lectured at or told to believe in something I don't. I do not harass the folks with very strong religious beliefs and try to convince them that they are wrong. Why is it OK for you to do that to me?

Liz
