"GSM Data Software System Coming Soon For PalmPilot"
February 25, 1999
CANNES, FRANCE, Newsbytes : TDK Systems has announced it is working with Smartcode Software, which will soon be part of the 3Com [NASDAQ:COMS] group, to develop a version of TDK's GlobalPulse software for the 3Com PalmPilot series of personal digital assistants (PDAs).
As reported previously by Newsbytes, GlobalPulse was the first software-based GSM/PCS (global system for mobile communications/personal communications services) data package to be released on to the market some 18 months ago. The package allows Windows 95-, 98- and CE-based PCs to use GSM data channels for data transmission, using a simple serial cable connection to the GSM/PCS mobile, rather than requiring a PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association) card device.
At the GSM World Congress, which opened in Cannes yesterday, TDK Systems revealed that the first non-Windows version of GlobalPulse is being developed for the Palm III, IIIx and V series of the 3Com PDA.
Plans call for the Palm version of GlobalPulse to connect the PalmPilot PDA directly to a variety of Ericsson and Nokia cellular phones. According to company officials, users will benefit from a complete package that facilitates wireless data communications, phonebook management, and integrated short- messaging services.
Plans call for GlobalPulse to ship later next month, at which stage it will come complete with a connector cable and Smartcode Software's popular HandPHONE software, which lets users edit, synchronize, and dial phone numbers on GSM cellular phones right from Palm organizers. According to Smartcode officials, the software also integrates a complete short messaging system (SMS) client for sending and receiving SMS text messages via supported cellular phones.
"GlobalPulse bridges the gap between cell phones and handheld computers, " said Stephane Bussat, the firm's vice president of sales & marketing.
According to Bussat, people today have a real need to be able to connect their phones to their mobile computing devices in order to do business while out of the office.
"With their e-mail and Web access capability, 3Com's Palm connected organizers are particularly well adapted for this use. On top of that, our HandPHONE software makes it easy to get the most from important features in cellphones without having to navigate through the cryptic, layered menu trees using 12-key numeric keypads," he said.
Newsbytes understands that v1.0 of GlobalPulse will support the Nokia 6110 and Ericsson 688/788 series GSM handsets.
