First Albany said it downgraded the computer networking group.
They said 3Com Corps (NASDAQ:COMS) profit warning Monday raised "significant questions about near-term growth of networking.
"Investment momentum in group has stalled," a report from analyst Matt Barzowskas said. They lowered Cabletron, 3Com, Cisco, Ascend, Shiva, U.S. Robotics and Xircom to neutral from buy, and maintained Bay Networks at neutral.

[Intel] expects "flat to down" first-quarter gross margins compared to 62.9% in the fourth quarter. For all of 1997 Bryant said Intel expects gross margins of about 60%, compared with 56% in 1996. At some point in the future, he said, he expects Intel's gross margins to drop to about 50%. Bryant said that because Intel's gross-margin percentages vary depending on product mix, the company puts more stock in absolute-dollar gross margins. He said absolute gross margins in the fourth quarter were $4 billion. |
