Trufflette, re CFO Joseph Bronson said he sees
the possibility of semiconductor demand exceeding
production capacity by about 5% in the year 2000.

Elsewhere the shortfall was quoted more precisely...
Applied Materials (AMAT) Chief Financial Officer Joseph Bronson
said demand for dynamic random access memory could outstrip
capacity by 4.7 percent in 2000.

Since SEMInvest quotes from industry officials acknowledge
zero visibility into next year, I'll just ignore Bronson's
number. But there was other good news...

Chip equipment company Novellus Systems (NVLS) expects revenue
to grow sequentially in the first and second quarters, said Chief Financial
Officer Robert Smith. He also said he expects the book-to-bill ratio to
be greater than one-to one in both quarters. In addition, the company
said that if capital spending in the industry is at 21 percent of revenue,
investments will favor wafer fabrication equipment through the next few
years.
