peter: re bond index: vanguard and schwab offer a thing called a "total bond index fund", it's like a S&P 500 for the bond market..it's based on a Lehman aggregate bond index.
it contains laddered maturity treasuries, mortgage-backed bonds, corporates and junk with an average maturity of around 8 years. It's trading around the place it traded when the 30-year bond was at 6%.
The spread between the 30-year and everything else is just returning (perhaps temporarily) to where it was last year.
