The brokerages must vary in their practices. I don't have any restriction except that I have buying power = 50% of the strike price. And since I go easy on margins, it has been pretty easy to do. I also find selling leaps much more profitable. I mean, how can anyone say CSCO will not be >120 (premium 38) and LU will not be >130 (premium 40) in Jan of 2001 ! I often wonder who buys the puts of these industry leaders !

I plan to buy back the puts as soon as the leaps are ATM - paying only time premium for them....my guess is this will be within the next earning season...! So this effectively means I may get to pocket a large portion of CSCOs 3700 & LUs 4000 per call...for a minimal risk...!
