Hi Michael,
This morning I wondered if we would hear from you or whether this were the beginning of the long silence! I'm so glad you're still with us for a little!
Ammo's fever is down to 101 today. Still coughing and weak. I guess I hate to give in and get antibiotics --I think we have a doctor who overuses them and I worry about the stories on resistant bacterial strains. He still hasn't eaten-just refuses. We watched Eddy(ie?) today. It was fun because of the basketball stuff which Ammo loved. Basketball players are not actors! Well, of course, we all know Shaq is going to get an Oscar for Shazaam but other than that....

I'm not much good at religious discussions--they get so emotional and people's beliefs are usually non-negotiable. I tend to dislike historical references as proof because I think they just reflect the psychology of the times rather than the particular religion. I don't think present day Christians should have to bear responsibility for the Inquisition any more than I should have to do penance for slavery. Humanity is what it is in all its glory and all its degradation and different philosophies and religions are played out against that backdrop-a combination of Zeitgeist and man's basic nature. Freddy will have to help me here, but it seems to me that the point of Christianity is forgiveness in spite of the horrific things we do, not because of the little good we achieve. All our criticism so far seems to be directed against the actions of frail, imperfect man, who screws up continually and unfortunately in the name of all religions. The religion itself (the Rationalists' objections aside)isn't usually the culprit.

I know Terrence believes that it is all an illusion, but then didn't Camus say something about the bleak sterility of life without illusion?
