By the way, I like Schoenberg and Elliot Carter, and I understand why others do not. I would be content to listen to them on the stereo... Also, there has been an absurd proliferation of symphony orchestras in many metro areas, certainly in Washington, where every municipality (Annapolis, Fairfax, Rockville, etc.) seems to think that it needs a full- blown orchestra. The orchestras are of inferior quality, one would be definitely better off with a recording, and it is largely the same old handful of upper middle- class town boosters who form the core audience.
