Java 2 Source Code On Web

Sun Microsystems on Wednesday posted its Java 2 platform source code on the Web for downloading.

The release is the first phase in the Java technology Community Source Licensing program, Sun said.

The Community Source Licensing model lets developers use and modify the source code for commercial-software product development at no charge; make changes to the code without returning them to Sun; and modify and share the code free of charge without mediation from Sun.

"We believe this is the right model to use, taking advantage of the best of the open source model while preserving the Java platform's core value proposition: cross-platform compatibility," said Alan Baratz, president of Java Software at Sun, in a prepared statement.

Sun launched its Community Source Licensing model in December to recruit help innovating on top of Java while maintaining compatibility, a spokeswoman said.

Sun will still charge royalties to those who modify the code and create derivative products for production use at their organizations or for commercial distribution, and require fees from service organizations that use it as the basis for commercial support or consulting contracts.

Up-front licensing fees have been eliminated, however, and per-unit royalties are incurred only when a product is shipped for resale or internal use.
