You participate in upside. Just not tremendous upside. Say January 1998 you sold puts on Amzn near or below the money. quote.yahoo.com and you achieved 500 bucks per contract for the sake of the argument. Well you pocketed the 500 bucks for sure and no one ever knocked on your door and delivered you the stock. But meanwhile the stock multiplied 20 times in price over the year. You didn't get that tremendous upside. The most you can achieve is the put premium that you pocketed.
