TOKYO (Nikkei)--NTT Software Corp. and electronic-commerce software developer Open Market Inc. of the U.S. have teamed up to develop systems for secure sales of news and other digital content over the Internet.

As a first step, the companies will develop software to integrate Open Market's Transact4 with the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (9432) affiliate's InfoPack. InfoPack features encryption and digital signatures, while Transact4 manages orders, processes payments and handles customer service.

The two firms will market the software to companies that use the Internet to distribute digital books, news and magazines, as well as still images and video. NTT Software will be in charge of sales in Japan, and Open Market will handle sales in the U.S. and other overseas markets.

(The Nikkei Industrial Daily Friday edition)

NTT may be private now, but it has deep ties to the Japanese government. A virtual stamp of approval, if you will. Very interesting.
