I agree in principle with this article: web phones are nice but not a seller in GSM consumer markets world wide. Look at the Nokia 9100, 9110, etc.
However, if Nextel is smart (which they clearly are) they could leverage this in the US today.
Since Nextel is focusing on the corporate market and business segment, this new handset could give businesses a bigger incentive to use Nextel services over existing CDMA and IS-136 networks.
Imagine, not only do you have cellular, SMS and direct connect but your employees' handsets can not access your own intra-net (WAP ready) and access real time updates, sales leads, notices, blah, blah .
With this product Nextel could penetrate a whole new segment in the corporate/business market-- no longer just for the DHL guy, private contractor or construction supervisor.
And to top it off isn this handset also supposed to be dual mode Nextel/GSM? Now THAT has potential: A handset that works in most of the US and most of the world. (Unlike this BSdual band GSM 900/1900 that covers only a few cities in the US.)
If CM and crew are as good as we all think they are, 99 should be a damn good year for this company.
