Stephen,
yes, there was an article in WSJ earlier this week that kind of triggered my post on the QCOM thread. However, it is so far determined that the WSJ reporters had no reliable source for his story, most likely wishful thinking from a competitor at China Telecom.
Our government is clearly going after not only China but also Japan and Korea over trade issues. I wonder how much of the current trade imbalance is due to drastic reduction in Asian consumer demand, vs artificial trade barrier that these countries put up. The superficial statistics that is available from the newspaper seem to suggest the former.
Whether it is "fair" trade or not, most Asian economies and governments are ill prepared to address these issues under the current environment. It is unclear to me as to what we are trying to accomplish. Sometimes I think the US simply prefer to totally destroy other nations, such as the USSR, so that we can remain the oasis of prosperity. Na, that may be a little too cynical, even for a skeptic like me.
