Magic: Next act: make the rope climber disappear

A hush fell over the impatient crowd as 'Prof.' Padmarajan finally emerged from a tarpaulin dome at Kochi's Durbar Hall Ground on the evening of February 10 and passed around a thick, 10-metre-long rope for them to examine. Straining against barricades, they squeezed and twisted it before he put it in a large basket and played a snake-charmer's tune. |

Suddenly, jaws dropped. The coil of rope had risen from the basket until it stood erect four feet high. Handing the gourd-pipe to an assistant, Padmarajan moved the basket by about five feet and then played the tune again.

Awestruck eyes followed the rope rising up to 15 feet and a young boy who climbed up the rope halfway. The child clung on for a minute before sliding down, and at a wave of the magician's hand the rope fell limply to the floor. After ten years of practice, Padmarajan had pulled off the Great Indian Rope Trick in the open air......
