Hi Dennis,
I went to their site and took a look at it. Got it installed on one of our systems here. Interesting. A few pros and cons...
Good: Tells you what you need, and can get it setup automatically...Saves you time, and hassle of always looking for updated drivers and software patches.
Bad: Although it has a nice database of software and hardware, I'm sure it's missing some stuff, so you can't strictly rely on it and leave it at that. Still impressive.
- Privacy is a BIG issue. Some people have problems having other people/companies know what's in their system. Alot of people hate and refuse cookies from sites...this goes a heck of alot further. Good be used quite maliciously as well. From an administrator's point of view, it's a potential nightmare.
Although I think it's a tremendous improvement over Windows 95, the Windows 98 Windows Update program is a bit of the same thing (but strictly for Windows components). Having Microsoft going through my system makes me a bit iffy sometimes.
For the average user though, it could be quite useful...as long as you're aware of the potential problems that go with it.
As a habit, I update my software and device drivers quite regularly. Solves more problems than most people think.
Like I told Mark, most crashes are due to software application errors (fixed by patches/updates), corrupt or bad device drivers (get the update from the hardware manufacturer) or bad RAM/CPU (rare).
BWDIK?
