tench--

you make some good points, however, the retail market is where the money is going to be in the coming years. business will still be important, but heres the caveat...businesses are going to start seeing real margin squeezes. as that happens the costs of a computer are going to be much tougher to hide.

bottom line, all intel can do is ditch celeron, bring P2 to price parity with AMD and drop the P3 prices so AMD cant make anything.

thats the way i would do it.

otherwise, AMD is going to eat intel alive. the low end cannabalizes the high end.

side note: i may be taking this too far. i dont think intel is going to go the way of SGI, but i think that their days as a street darling are over. consistently now AMD has released technology either slightly ahead of or on par with intel. this hasnt happened before and it represents a very real and determined threat. whatever the process problems, AMD continues to drudge ahead. if i were barrett, i would be thinking of ways to kill AMD for good and all.

what happens if the intel MSFT split gets really bad? what happens if MSFT releases an AMD optimized windows 2k? only the paranoid survive<G>.

good luck to all,
trey
