PPS: When the new organizations have leaders and they are going into negotiations to see who gets what for their survival and Bill is in there battling for all the gravy bits for his new organization - that will be one hell of a negotiation if it happens that way. If the gov doesn't set that one up right BG will screw them out of their socks. I hope the gov is careful about how the leadership is set up in advance, how these divisions happen, who knows where the keys and skeletons are and so forth.

Bill has fiduciary obligations to his shareholders which are imposed by law. "Cherry-picking" the good people or products for his own company and deliberately leaving the others under funded or under capitalized would violate those fiduciary obligations.

So, while there is certainly no assurance that the various divisions of your hypothetical breakup would start out as absolute equals, there is also no assurance that relying on government bureaucrats to divvy up Microsoft's physical assets and personnel would do a better job than the market.

Your views as to Bill Gates' motivations for the reorganization of the company (which Ballmer, not Gates, actually instituted) and personal stock sales paint him in an especially bad light. I would be curious to know if they are based on anything more than speculation. Do you have sources telling you these things?

If so, maybe you could make some news by telling us who or what they are. If not, if it's just your speculation, please make that fact clear.
