Just go to the Stock Forums page, choose the 1996 Magic 25 list and choose Ampex. IMO the SDX technology seems to be an architectural change that allows storage peripherals to be connected directly to the hard drive electronics which will now include caching buffers. It seems that the main intent is to bypass the main CPU and all that processing overhead and bottlenecking -- all to speed up the transfer rates of devices such as CD-ROM drives. The press release makes no mention of the actual hard drive platter(s) themselve(s) - at least I didn't see any. Hence, I'm not so sure that there is any impact on our KM interests here. I may be wrong, but I liken the data transfer and speed enhancements provided by SDX to those given by the direct memory access cycle stealing techniques that are used in CPUs.

On the KM note, IMO, there may indeed be sticking points that are keeping other signers from jumping on the bandwagen. Although I believe that only the pre-amp chip is mentioned in the patent, does anyone know the extent of circuit design needed to incorporate KM? Also, with companies like WDC focusing their efforts on large thrusts such as SDX, their compulsion to go to KM may be somewhat put off - especially if they don't feel threatened by Maxtor - which may be the case. With the SEGs and WDCs doing so well right now, they may find KM on TFI much less compelling and just may wait for KM on MR to be demonstrated as truly viable and reliable...
