"The SDX interface connects SDX storage peripherals directly to all new WD EIDE hard drives, via a
simple 10-pin SDX cable, instead of connecting to the host system via the existing 40-pin EIDE
connector. This allows the SDX storage peripheral to take advantage of the high performance and
caching capabilities of the hard drive. All new WD EIDE hard drives will support SDX beginning in
CYQ297 and will be distributed to OEM customers and system integrators, followed by the upgrade
market through the reseller and retail channels.

The first generation SDX products are targeted at CD-ROM applications. Sanyo Electric Company
Information and Telecommunications Business will manufacture the first CD-ROM drive with the SDX
technology in Q2CY97. For SDX CD-ROM drives, SDX improves the performance of all existing CD
software by automatically caching the data onto the hard drive. Furthermore, an SDX CD-ROM
leverages all the advanced features of the hard drive such as lower access times and faster data transfer
rates. This can be translated into a CD-ROM performance improvement up to 100 percent. "

You can see SDX tech is kind of interface which connect other peripherals such as CD-ROM or floppy disk to the hard drive controller (EIDE) to take advantage of the cache memory installed for the hard drive. The result is enhanced speed for those device NOT THE CAPACITY WE ARE TALKING HERE.
