Dan, you need the second nic when using a cable modem or ADSL as your PC communicates with the modem via ethernet. They have no serial connection as with a external ISDN or internal ISDN PA. you use the assigned IP address from your provider on one and a bogus subnet like 192.168.0.0 with class b subnet. Sean
