I could not agree more. Use of "due to" in place of "because of" is one of the easier ways to distinguish the truly literate from the only partially literate.

An entertaining parlor game for the correct circle of guests is to construct a list of those misusages which are the most reliable indicators of semi-literacy. Lie vs. lay is my wife's pet test. Effect vs. affect (even after working for me for more than a year my secretary still gets this wrong), and imply vs. infer, are two of mine.
