Amen to that!!! Frankly, I am thinking of bailing out as soon as there is any type of upward movement. I've known this company quite well from a professional standpoint (I used their technology for business system development for a few years now), but lately I am not so sure about their strategic direction. They are falling behind the big ones (Oracle, Informix) in the database market with new features/release upgrades, even if a lot of the stuff coming out of the big ones is hype and vaporware. Their position in the tool development market is unclear as I really have no sense of where they are heading with their 4GL which used to be the best out there. It seems that their main "hype" thrust is towards the Internet with the Webspeed product, which brings me to the point of "What type of the company are they positioning themselves as? DB, tools, or Internet middleware?" Also, for what it's worth, they are reviving their professional consulting practice that's been dormant to non-existant the last few years (an attempt to increase revenues). I am sure that makes all consulting companies that are Progress partners very "thrilled".
In my personal assessment, I was predicting that MSFT will buy PRGS to leverage enterprise DB market since they fell flat on their faces with SQL Server. I hope I am wrong, but I think the window of opportunity for PRGS is gone.
Sorry for a long post, this is just a few years of frustration's worth. |
