Why I live in the Philippines is a long story. To make it short, I was here with the Peace Corps from '79 to '81; went back to NYC, got a job, and realized after 6 months that if I didn't get out of that scene immediately I never would. So I came back here and have been based here since, going through a number of work incarnations, most of which involve writing. Now I write mostly about money, which is the best way to earn money by writing. The article is a throwback to a previous incarnation. I used to write for travel magazines, mostly about adventure travel; I recently wrote most of an adventure travel guide to the Philippines, which has just gone on the market, though I haven't seen it yet. The article is for an adventure travel magazine covering Asia; a basic destination piece on the place I live. Mostly on wreck diving, jungle trekking, white water stuff, sailing, and the rest of the usual games. Spent the weekend, in fact, making what I'm pretty sure was the first successful attempt to reach the crater of Mt. Pinatubo from the west side, which is where most of the stuff that came out of the volcano landed. Not really that difficult; Joey, who is not quite 9, was the first over the rim of the crater, but some swimming, a lot of scrambling, and some tricky rock & rope work was involved. Good fun, though my legs feel it. |
