So what DO you believe to be the correct constructions (and how does your lover differ)?

Fowler doesn't do as well for this as for some other differences, because he focuses principally on the other tenses. He points out, but doesn't belabor, the main issue: lay is transitive ONLY; lie is intransitive ONLY.

If your lover says he or she is going to lay on the bed, the only proper response is "WHAT are you going to lay on the bed, dear?"
