LATIN AMERICA PC MARKET GREW 10 PERCENT IN 1998, ACCORDING TO GARTNERGROUP'S DATAQUEST
SAN JOSE, CALIF. (March 1) BUSINESS WIRE -March 1, 1999--The Latin America personal computer market grew 10 percent in 1998, with shipments of almost 3.7 million units, up from 3.3 million units in 1997, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Group Inc.(NYSE:IT).
"Difficulties emerged from the effects of the Asian crisis. Additionally, a severe contraction of credit throughout the region and shrinking government revenue dampened industry growth in most of Latin America," said Luis Anavitarte, senior industry analyst for Dataquest's Personal Computer Quarterly Statistics Latin America program. "Once again, Mexico posted strong unit growth, ending the period with a 24.5 regional market share, further reducing its traditional gap with Brazil."
"Regional sales by Dell grew 94 percent over 1997, presenting a key issue among other vendors regarding the future viability of direct sales in an area dominated by increasingly fewer distributors and large amounts of resellers," added Mr. Anavitarte.
Compaq substantially increased sales in 1998, moving upwards its market share 2.2 percent over 1997 results (See Table 1). Strong performances in Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico by IBM, solidified its hold on the No. 2 position, despite its overall flat growth in the region. Hewlett-Packard consolidated in the No. 3 spot with 9.3 percent growth. |
