Brian
thank you for the article, I have not seen it yet
I think it would be cyrx. I would be very surprised(pleasanly) if it would be amd. I always thought cpq would not review their no amd policy untill k6 would be available in millions and that would not happened before the second half of this year.
I liked last two paragraphs in the article:
"One player that could be hurt if low-cost PCs take off is Intel, whose profit model relies on pushing customers to buy the latest, highest-margin chips. Intel insists it has no plans to design new processors specifically for cheap PCs--even though the low end creates sales opportunities for rivals Cyrix and Advanced Micro Devices.
Compaq and other cheap PC champions think that might be shortsighted. If low-cost systems--with or without Intel Inside--bring millions of new households into the computer age, then Compaq will have once again changed the personal computer business."

The second to last sounded as a good news to amd and cyrx and the last one sounded almost like a threat to intel coming from pc-makers. It is great.

ps when I talked to cpq reps they told me abouut cpq and cyrx at law end but they avoided about talking of their plans for high end computers and K6. Which is an indication that k6 is under evaluation and it might be used for high end systems. CPQ is commited to use intel for servers during this year but the servers did not bother me a bit. I guess we will talk about servers next year -- we have to leave something for next year, right? :-))
