First of all, let me point out that there was an error in that. The wavelength at 200GB is 1.5mm.

Secondly, if you are talking about optoelectronics, we do it all the time optically. On the other hand, if you are talking about the signal mixers, then a very short wavelength means that circuit parasitics (i.e. the resistance, inductance and capacitance of interconnects) play heavily into the design, so much so that one is driven to using microelectronics or a very labor-intensive design to accomplish anything.

BTW - I've completed my asessment of the white paper and will post on that later when I get the time.
