Why is it so inappropriate to ask an honest question?

I received this message from Don Green, and I would like to address it publicly.

Don:

For starters, your "honest" question implies that people on this thread may be involved in misconduct, and you suggest that Wisdom may be one such individual (apparently because he chooses to use a pseudonym). Do you have ANY concrete reason at all to think that ANYONE on this board has engaged in the kinds of activities that you are alleging? If you do, then I would sincerely like to know what they are, as that would be a concern. However, if all you have is a suspicion based on something that you read that has absolutely no connection with DCI, then why would you make such a suggestion at all. Simply because people are promoting DCI on a thread that was set up to discuss DCI?

Here's a rule of thumb that I would like to offer as "appropriate conduct" on a public forum. Would you have made the same allegation based on what you know if we were all sitting in a room together? It's just too easy to be inconsiderate and judgmental on a faceless forum like this. If you wanted to make specific queries/allegations, then you could have used private mail to address your concerns.

What irks me is not people's "honest" questions. I've been called on the carpet here for stepping over the line in the past. What bothers me is the gall that people have to make baseless accusations of misconduct in a public forum. Even if we had such individuals on this thread, did you really believe that they are going to "fess up" here? On the public record?
