Lynn,
The embroider is done on sewing machines. The pattern is purchased on memory cards about the size of a credit card only thicker. You can work up your own designs on a computer and store them on the memory cards like a floppy disk.

Golf shirts and towels have the embroider on them in the form of club or resort names.

Drop by your local sewing machine shop and ask them about embroider machines. You will find a whole new world of computing. Careful though, the last machine cost me about $4,000.
