That's funny. I hope your mother saved your 'scarf' for you.

In the early '80s an elderly Norwegian woman (keeping her 39-year-old son company starting an agricultural project) in the Sudan decided to teach children how to knit and paid for the importation of yarn and needles herself. At first she taught boys and girls. Soon she discovered the boys were more interested and did much nicer work so she concentrated on teaching boys from about 7-12. Until I got used to it I thought it was very humorous watching boys walking around knitting sweaters.
