My mother knitted all the time and damaged her finger-nails. One of my first memories of life is peeking out from the cupboard underneath the stairs where we were sheltering from the German bombs dropping on our neighbourhood. It was the middle of the night, bombs were bursting and there she was as calm as you like, knitting a pullover.

All her friends, all our neighbours knitted and did embroidery. There was embrodiery in every home.

In Ireland too it was and is a strong tradition.
