Linux is the name of an operating system kernel. It is free. Most (all) of the software that helps it to be an operating system is written under the GNU license, which basically means that it is open source and free, and any derivitive works of it must be open source and free. It is mostly written by people all over the world who see the need for an inexpensive, fast, reliable operating system running on intel/PC hardware. Before Linux, there was none, and still isn't, except for Solaris (free for individual use).

AFAIK, no one on this thread has found a good Linux play, except maybe Applix, I'm not sure about this yet.

You could start at:
linuxworldexpo.com
and look at these companies. My guess is that Sun, and Intel will benefit from Linux, and possibly Caldera, Applix.

I would bet that any software/hardware company who targets Linux will make money from it. I hope to make money from it someday :)
