Stephen, don't fall for conspiracy theories here. Bond yields increased (bond prices down) because of fears of inflation due to an overheated economy. NAPM numbers this morning were very strong, and this adds fuel to the fire. This is a natural market reaction. The markets are forward-looking which means they are anticipating inflation.

Here's just one example of what could happen. Right now one of the greatest downward influences on inflation is cheap oil. Once Asia starts to recover in ernest oil prices will go up. And oil is a primary constituent not only of fuel, but plastics and chemicals as well.
