WASHINGTON - More Americans filed for bankruptcy in 1998 than ever
before, but the rate of increase dropped from the previous year. The
Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts says some 1.39 million individuals and 44,000 businesses sought protection from creditors in federal bankruptcy courts last year. That represents a 2.7% increase over 1997. Filings had risen 19% in 1997 compared to a year earlier.
