You're correct. A computer is better, and they can be had for a fairly low price. However, the WebTV idea is that most people are not computer savvy, and have an aversion to going out and spending the money on something that they think they'll never understand how to use. Also, computers don't look much cheaper to these non-computer savvy people, because they see the advertised prices, which are considerably higher than the web TV prices. And these people aren't likely to go out and get something that the salesperson would call obsolete.

WebTV is a good way to get E-Mail and web access, and is a lot cheaper than buying the typical low end pentium. One of my friends got a WebTV, and is apparently pretty happy with it. Maybe it would only have been a few hundred dollars more for a computer, but he

- Didn't have room in his studio apartment for a computer

- Didn't have a few hundred dollars more for a computer

This is one type of person that WebTV is targeted at. The other type is the older person who's never used a computer in their life, and doesn't want to take the time to learn how to use one.
