The studies I've seen report an aggregate cost savings on the order of 20 to 30 % as best I can recall, which would be expected to increase even further with wider availability of FDG and imaging systems. I don't expect PET imaging to ever be used on as many patients as MRI due to not only its cost, but the fact that it simply provides more specific information pertinent to more selected clinical situations. MRI can provide very precise anatomical images that are referrable to most organ systems and useful in almost every area of medicine. PET currently has its stongest utility in oncology, cardiology, and neurology, but of course new applications are always being developed.
