TI sees Q1 chip shipments up 4-6 pct vs Q1

March 1, 1999 12:58 PM
ORLANDO, Fla., March 1, (Reuters) - Semiconductor maker Texas Instruments is on track for 4-6 percent sequential growth in computer-chip volume shipments in this year's first quarter, a company executive said Monday.

"For the first time, we will have a first quarter up from the previous fourth quarter," Gilles Delfassy, director of TIs Worldwide Wireless Communications Business Unit, said at an institutional investors conference hosted by Raymond James & Associates. "We are quite optimistic."

Delfassy said TI is in a dominant position as digital wireless semiconductors move from second-generation mobile voice service into third-generation very high speed multimedia service. "We have made a clean sweep of all worldwide third-generation base stations," he said.

Dallas-based TI has transformed itself from a diverse technologies company into a major digital signal processing company. Part of that transformation involved the acquisition of 16 percent of Micron Technology Inc MU in exchange for its dynamic random access memory unit.
