Steven is simply being pissy. He is correct, of course, and there are numerous rules governing the placement of the period, which I can look up and post if you are curious. However, the more recent rule of thumb is that the period belongs inside the parentheses.

Re fetch, tote, and carry: Please forgive me for not being sure if my memory is reliable (I have been chided in a PM today for forgetting some things I didn't realize that I was supposed to remember); but as I recall, you are in the South. In the South it used to be perfectly acceptable to refer to a "lift" provided by one's cousin with the following: "My cousin carried me here."
