Dell giving 2 Pentium III's for the price of one: Dell cuts prices on workstation computers biz.yahoo.com ROUND ROCK, Texas, March 1 (Reuters) - Dell Computer Corp. (Nasdaq:DELL - news) said Monday it cut prices on workstation computers, offering computers with two processors for prices comparable to what rivals are charging for workstations with a single processor. A Dell Precision WorkStation 210 with two 450 megahertz Intel Pentium III processors would cost $2,372, at 9.5 percent the most significant price drop from the previous prices. Dell's workstation prices now range in some cases lower than the equivalent models of rivals Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HWP - news) and Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE:CPQ - news), despite offering an extra processor. A Dell spokesman credited the company's direct-sales model with providing the cost savings enabling it compete on pricing. Dell is neck-and-neck with Hewlett-Packard in sales of workstations, which are networked computers typically used by engineers and others with data-intensive computing needs. Dell shares rose 44 cents, to $80.56, in trade Monday on the Nasdaq stock market.
