Regarding different brokers, it's mostly to be able to borrow shares. I use Dreyfus, and can't get 2/3 of the issues that come up on the thread. Some people solve this problem by having accounts at several places, but then they might have insufficient funds to get the position they'd like to have... Thus the central bank/share repository idea!
