Jon, there a ton of references out there on this topic,
and it is a big topic, but here's the general scoop:

XML is extensible (hence the 'x'). So what?
Well, unlike HTML, you can encode *any* kind of
business data in it. For example, a personnel file,
a spreadsheet, a sales report - any kind of structured
information that is commonly found in databases.

Plus, XML supplies an easy way to define how this
structured information is to be viewed (separate from
the data itself).

Bottom line: the combination of these two points
means business data can be easily published and
distributed on the web without going through all
the current gyrations. Also, it means that business data
can now be exchanged in a standard way. Thus,
a parts list submitted by one of my vendors, if
done in XML, is self-defined and thus easily
readable by my own computer system. No need
to worry about data-interchange formats etc.

Hope that gives you an idea. It's huge.
