The cost of use is about $50,000 per unit from what I have heard. Given that Medicare is about to go bankrupt, and that healthcare is already 15% of GNP, there is not a whole lot of incentive to provide high cost care anymore. It is an interesting problem that while the US government wants to promote health, people also need to die so that our current entitlement programs (Medicare, Social Security) don't go bust any faster. It is expensive to keep people alive until eternity. So far, most insurance companies are not reimbursing full costs. And many healthcare facilities are going bankrupt because of cost overruns specifically on these very expensive life-prolonging procedures.

Mortality results can vary between 30-70% even at experienced hospitals.
