Alright, perhaps we have a terminological confusion then. Conventionally, selfishness is used to designate inordinate self- regard, and self- interest is the more neutral term. In fact, one can say that self- interest, broadly understood, encompasses the full array of one's goals, including the desire to look after one's family or behave philanthropically. Perhaps that is as far as this discussion can go.
