Life is pretty amazing: there is already grass growing in the bottoms of the canyons, even though they are inundated every year; there are some shrubs and ferns starting up as well. I was amazed to see tadpoles in the water, even in pools that were bright orange from iron sulfide. I can't imagine how the frogs or toads got up there; it would be a hell of a long hop up from the lowlands. Some birds around. Inside the crater just about nothing is growing; the lake itself seems quite sterile. The water is warm, with a definite sulfur smell and a low Ph.
