DELL could be taking business from EMC...
I just read an interesting new InformationWeek article on EMC. Here are a couple of comments (from the 3/1/99 edition) to pay attention to:
<<When interoperability among different servers and operating systems isn't an issue, more limited, less pricey solutions may be appropriate. Dell, for instance, last week said it now offers a Fibre Channel SAN for up to four Windows NT servers-for one-third or even one-quarter of what an EMC network would cost.
That's fine with Michael Carey, manager of networks and systems at Centocor Inc., a biopharmaceutical firm in Malvern, Pa. He has EMC Symmetrix systems in place for HP-UX servers but balked at an EMC Enterprise Storage Network for his NT implementation because of its cost. Instead, he'll implement Dell SANs for 100 NT servers that support databases and other apps. Dell's SANs will be based on new PowerVault storage products, including the company's first eight-port Fibre Channel switch.>>

Hmmm....DELL's cost effective storage solutions may be ideal for many of their large value-concious customers. IMHO, DELL will become a MAJOR player in the storage market sooner than many of "the experts" have predicted. BTW...if I had to own a storage stock (outside of my large DELL position) it would be NTAP -- DELL's strategic alliance partner in this growing market. I will admit that I am looking at NTAP. Yet, the more I investigate the storage market, the more excited I am about DELL's potential to achieve GREAT things in this field. This is a high margin business where DELL will become a MAJOR player. The DELL business model provides great cost and service efficiencies.
Fasten your seat belts, the fun has just begun in the storage arena ..!!!
