Turnstone Systems Introduces Industry's First Remote DSL Spectrum Analyzer CrossScope(TM) Provides Remote Spectral Analysis for Any Copper Local Loop Connected Through a Copper CrossConnect CX100

March 2, 1999

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., March 1
/PRNewswire/Turnstone Systems today announced
CrossScope Spectral Analysis Software, a
powerful new application that leverages the
Copper CrossConnect(TM) CX100 to provide
in-depth spectral analysis of any copper loop
in the network. CrossScope provides remote
Network Operations Center (NOC) personnel
with easy-to-read graphical displays of volts
versus time, or spectrum plots, for signals on
any copper loop in the service providers
copper plant, without requiring technicians to
visit a Central Office (CO) with specialized
test equipment. CrossScope reveals potential
spectral compatibility problems, such as
interferers, identifies the type of Digital
Subscriber Line (DSL) on the line (ADSL,
SDSL, etc.) and reveals potential impairments
to the DSL signal.

"CrossScope is like having a remote,
software-based oscilloscope that can tap
into any service line in the network," said Eric
Andrews, Vice President of Marketing. "It
enables the local loop experts to sit at a PC
in their office and quickly troubleshoot any
issue that gets escalated from the field,
without requiring extra service visits with
specialized test gear. It's the most
cost-effective and convenient way to
perform a thorough analysis of what's really
happening on the copper local loop."

CrossScope is the newest member of
Turnstone's Copper CrossConnect product
family, a suite of products designed to
automate the operational tasks associated
with installing and maintaining copper local
loop facilities. A network manager can use
CrossScope to connect to any copper loop
served by a Copper CrossConnect CX100,
and capture a real time waveform displayed
in volts/time or spectral view. Users can
isolate particular frequency ranges they want
to examine, such as the Direct Current (DC)
voltage, the voice band or the higher
frequency DSL range. These signals can also
be averaged over time to provide a clear
picture of what is happening on the line.
These capabilities enable service providers to
detect problems such as floating DC
voltages, impacts from power lines (power
cross), crosstalk from telephone ringing,
wideband noise, and DSL crosstalk.
Furthermore, benchmark snapshots of
standard DSL signals, such as SDSL, IDSL
and ADSL, are built into the software, so that
users can quickly compare the signal they are
seeing with the signal that should appear.
CrossScope also enables users to store
spectral results, maintaining a useful history
for troubleshooting and analysis in the future.

CrossScope software runs on a standard PC,
and can connect to any one of a number of
Copper CrossConnects deployed in the
network. CrossScope is currently in Beta with
several service providers, and will be
generally available in April 1999. Pricing for
CrossScope starts at $20,000.
